A new study commissioned by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and titled Global Financial Turmoil and Emerging Market Economies: Major Contagion and a Shocking Loss of Wealth? has just been launched. The paper reviews the origins of the current crisis and its impact on emerging market economies, focusing mainly on Developing Asia, the NICs and Latin America. According to the study, Developing Asia is suffering more than other emerging market regions as a result of the region’s much more rapid expansion during the boom years. Losses on financial assets in Developing Asia in 2008 totaled $9.6 trillion, or just over one year’s worth of GDP.
