The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has just launched the 2009 edition of its “Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific.” It focuses on the convergence of three global crises – an economic downturn, food and fuel price volatility, and climate change – on Asia and the Pacific, and what the region can do to address them. The report studies the crisis threats and outlines ways in which economies in the region can move forward. The analysis and proposed policy actions center around three key themes:

  • A crisis-vulnerable region that nevertheless showed remarkable resilience when the financial crisis hit.
  • The global outlook for 2009 has darkened considerably with new layers of crises looming large for the region.
  • Crises present an opportunity to move from resilience to resistance, if recognized as such by the region.

The full-text of the report is available on the Web.
