The UNCTAD’s World Investment Prospectus Survey 2009-2011 has just been launched and provides an outlook on future trends in foreign direct investment (FDI) by some of the largest transnational corporations (TNCs). The report focuses this year on the global economic and financial crisis and its impact on trans-nationals’ FDI plans. A sample of 240 company executives selected from among the largest non-financial transnational corporations talk about the likely effects of the crisis on their international investment strategies over the next three years.

In the short term, companies expect a sharp decline in their FDI expenditures in 2009. However, in the medium term TNCs seem rather optimistic about the evolution of the economic outlook.

The report is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 provides an assessment of the global FDI outlook for 2009-2011. Chapters 2 and 3 offer insights into specific trends per home region and industry respectively, while chapter 4 focuses on prospects per host region and country.
