Economic Survey of Chile

The OECD has just published its “Economic Survey of Chile.” The country, which is now on the path to becoming the OECD’s newest member, is coming out of recession relatively fast on the back of government stimulus measures and a rebound in cooper export prices.

Although income per capita on a purchasing power parity basis has increased sharply over the past twenty years, it still stands at only 44 percent of the OECD average. More effective competition, innovation and education policies will be needed for Chile to converge faster to OECD living standards and to reduce poverty and income inequality, which remain high despite recent improvements.

The key challenges discussed in the survey are:

-Overcoming the crisis

-Strengthening the medium-term framework for fiscal policy

-Fostering productivity growth and longer-term potential output growth

-Investing in human capital by improving education

The full-text of the survey is available to the IESE community.
